NZ Manuka honey and antibacterial activity – what is all the fuss about?
Professor Peter Molan, a biochemist at Waikato University, has been researching the healing properties of honey since 1981. Professor Molan identified that honey produced from the New Zealand manuka bush (manuka honey) has an activity level that is not found in other honeys.
It's generally accepted that manuka honey with a MG level of 100+ or higher may have health benefits, read our facebook post on the 17 benefits of Manuka Honey
What is MG?
Methylglyoxal or MG is the active ingredient primarily responsible for the antibacterial action of manuka honey. The discovery that methylglyoxal is manuka honey's "active ingredient" was made in 2008 by Professor Thomas Henle, head of the Institute of Food Chemistry at the Technical University of Dresden (Germany).
"Manuka honey should be one of the few food items for which a health-promoting property beyond the basic nutritional function can be clearly documented."
